Welcome to Houten-Portfolio
"Houten" is the Dutch word for Wooden. Eric deNeve is a Photographer and Wood Carver of Dutch birth having immigrated to the USA from the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia, which has a rich tradition of wood carving. Those islands, along with his travels to Central Africa and his past home in North Carolina with its Appalachian Mountain's arts and crafts, are a strong influence on Eric's work. These Portfolios will offer you a variety of examples of his work. The photographs and carved wood pieces are for sale, or if previously sold, the examples can provide you inspiration to commission a piece. The wood carvings are priced based on time spent working the wood and the complexity of the detailing. These items are not machine made; Eric hand carves all the pieces requiring considerable time to reveal the wood's potential.
About
Eric is a retired Architect with over 40 years of professional experience in design who decided to pursue his photography, art and wood sculpting passions.
The expression of both the beauty and flaws of individual hardwood pieces sets his wood carvings apart from the more typical, refined machine tooling of wood; the individual character of each piece defines what it will become. The focus is to create useful wood objects defined in a more creative and unusual way. Eric's process utilizes chain and hand saws for rough forming, various heavy hand chisels and adzes to shape, smaller hand chisels to refine and cabinet scrapers and sandpaper to smooth. Penetrating oils bring out the natural beauty of each pieces. As natural objects, each sculpted pieces will continue to evolve its character as it acclimates to its environment.
He has been to over 30 countries and lived in 4 of those. Eric's more recent photography included in this portfolio, chronicles his travels in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America.
